Berkertex was established in 1936 as a manufacturer of mid-priced clothing. The founder was Leslie Berker, and the company was to become one of the largest makers of clothing in the UK. In 1942, Norman Hartnell began designing ready-to-wear dresses for Berkertex,an arrangement that continued into the 1950s. Still researching some prose to describe this designer

Vintage 60s two-piece swimsuit by Berlei £40.00
This is just a lovely swimsuit: neat, nicely shaped shorts, and an A-line tunic top with structured bust which ends just slightly shy of bottom of them. Blanes of London in a pretty font
Blanes was one of the small couture houses which appeared after the war, with the return of prosperity in the later 40s, but was defeated by the birth of High Street fashion in the 60s. HRH loves Blanes - the cut, the fabric, and the sheer wearability of the designs - and still keeps a couple of pieces in her wardrobe, definitely NFS.

Vintage 1960s black sack dress with stunning back detail by Blanes £80.00
Here is a lovely, quirky Blanes dress in heavy black cotton - demure and completely unexceptional at first glance. The front has a round neck, from which the dress hangs in pleats (I'm not sure if this is what was called a sack dress, but certainly it's that sort of idea).....

Vintage1950s vibrant striped dress by Blanes £110.00
Princess Mimi is a huge fan of Blanes dresses, and always has been - they are well-made and quirky, and this one is no exception! A vibrant summer frock in a vertical stripe, the pattern used to dramatic effect on the bodice and pockets, you won't find anything to beat this in any shop today!....

Vintage unusual 1950s/early 60s summer white plastic handbag £40.00
After the war, plastic really came into its own: this is a delightful little bag, of a type to become more common in the following decade. It is made from stiff white plastic with an all over swirly pattern reminiscent of brush strokes, and stitching detail. It has two handles, and fastens with the original zipper.....

Vintage 1980s-does-50s French flowered skirt suit £52.00
We don't normally dip our toes into the 80s - it is, after all, generally considered to be 'the decade that fashion forgot', but there were a few gems about - and this is certainly one of them! 1960s/70s vintage bronze metallic leather flats by Gabor £25.00
This is a neat lttle pair of 'go anywhere' shoes, comfortable and stylish, and with the woven uppers so fasionable in the mid-fifties. Although there are marks on the soles, I do believe these shoes have scarcely been worn, since all the internal marks are so clear, and the original 'G' is still on the sole. They are nearly big enough for me...but not quite!....

Keynote by Littlewoods in a pretty font
There was a time when every town of size had a Littlewoods store; now, of course, Littlewoods is an internet and catalogue business, part of the Shop Direct group. Founded in Liverpool in 1923 by Sir John Moores, who made his fortune from a combination of retail and gambling (football pools), Littlewoods stores sold fresh food and fashion items, and were among the first to offer disposable fashion to the mass market under the 'Keynote' brand name. The brand continued into the 1980s; the business was sold in 2004.

Rose Marie Reid in a pretty font
Born in 1906, a member of the Mormon church, Rose Marie Reid was the most important swimwear designer of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Her career began when she made her husband a pair of trunks from an old duck fabric coat, at a time when mens' costumes were generally made from wool: these became popular, and when he claimed (inaccurately) that women's costumes were also available, Reid Holiday Togs was born. Reid's main concern was to celebrate the female form whilst preserving modesty: although some bikinis bear her label, she never came to terms with this fashion and thus her company declined throughout the 60s. Reid herself left the company in 1962, and moved to designing wigs: RMR Swimwear ceased trading in 1965, but the company name still exists, and wa bought by the Sirena Aparel Group in 1994.

Vintage 1960s silky sundress by Rose Marie Reid £40.00
As an appreciater of vintage swimwear, I love Rose Marie Reid! I was really excited when we unearthed this, as I'd never seen anything other than swimsuits with her label... I wonder whether the great lady herself was directly responsible for this dinky little number, which we date to the late fifties, possibly very early sixties. In flourescent pink, yellow and green on a barely-detectable white ground, this gorgeous beach dress epitomises the era's beach style! ....

St Michael in a pretty font
The first Marks and Spencer store opened in 1904, in, with the revolutionary idea of buying direct from the suppliet. The trademark 'St Michael' brand was introduced in 1928 by Simon Marks, as a tribute to his father and founder of the store, Michael Marks; it denoted goods made entirely in the UK. In the 1970s and 80s it was claimed that 90% of British women bought their undies at M&S; thus St Michael was said to be the patron saint of lingerie, although from 1956 all goods were sold under this label. The brand came to represent no-nonsense quality and value-for-money, but was not considered sexy enough for the changing market and was removed as a brand in 2000: the name now acts as a guarantee of quality, and of the 'intrinsic values of the company'.
